ChatGPT or Google: where people really search for products in 2026
AI assistants are taking over the comparison stage, Google still owns explicit buying intent. What changes for an online store and how to cover both without doubling the work.
Two different ways of searching
People who open an AI assistant ask long, contextual questions: "which vacuum cleaner for a house with two dogs and parquet floors". People who open Google, when they are ready to buy, type brand, model, "price", "reviews", "shipping". These are different moments of the same journey, not competing channels.
What is moving to assistants
- The shortlist: narrowing twenty options to three. It used to happen through articles and comparison sites; now the assistant often does it.
- Eligibility questions: compatibility, sizes, materials, use cases.
- Review summaries: "what other people say" arrives already summarised.
This mainly erodes informational traffic: "best X" articles and generic guides lose clicks. It is the same phenomenon as AI Overviews and zero-click search.
What stays on Google
Explicit transactional intent, local search, the final check on price and availability, and all brand traffic. Sellers still collect the conversion there, even when the decision matured elsewhere: the final click takes the credit, but it is not where the choice was made.
The consequence for sellers
Measurement needs an update. If you only look at last click, AI looks marginal while it is shaping the shortlist. Three concrete actions:
- Track AI referral: group assistant domains into a dedicated channel in GA4 and watch trend and quality (these sessions often convert well because the decision is already made). Numbers and method in the post on AI traffic to online stores.
- Make the catalogue readable: complete structured data, up-to-date availability and price, a clean product feed. It serves Google Shopping and agents in the same way.
- Write to be quoted: short answer at the top, verifiable data with sources, specific FAQs. The format an assistant can quote is the same one Google rewards in quick answers.
What not to do
Do not move budget away from traditional SEO in the name of AI: the technical base is the same and transactional intent still sits on Google. And do not chase informational traffic volumes that never convert: a few pages that answer real commercial questions are worth more. The full approach is in our e-commerce marketing strategy guide.

The questions clients ask us before we start
5 straight answers — costs, timelines, risks — from real projects.
Is ChatGPT replacing Google for shopping?
No. Assistants are taking the exploration and comparison stage, while Google remains dominant on explicit transactional intent and local search. What changes is the distribution of moments, not the single channel.
How do I know if I get traffic from AI assistants?
In GA4 you can create a channel group that treats assistant domains (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com) as referral sources, then compare sessions, conversion rate and average value.
Do I need different content for AI and for Google?
No, you need better content for both: a direct answer up front, verifiable and quotable data with sources, clear structure and correct structured data. Duplicating content helps neither.
Does traffic from assistants convert?
In most cases it arrives late in the journey, so with conversion rates above informational traffic, but with volumes still small compared with traditional search. Measure it to understand its real weight on your site.
What makes an assistant cite my store?
Allowing AI crawlers, publishing complete and structured product data, keeping prices and availability current, and producing content that answers directly and verifiably.
Should I cut SEO budget to invest in AI?
No. The technical foundations overlap: structure, content that answers, product data. Cutting SEO also weakens visibility inside assistants, which largely draw on the same signals.
